Living in Valrico
Unincorporated community in east central Hillsborough about 14 miles east of Tampa, renamed Valrico in the 1880s.
There is no city hall here: Valrico is a Census designated place, and Hillsborough County sets the rules.
Known for: James McCabe Theater
Before the 1880s the area was called Long Pond; it was renamed Valrico, Spanish for rich valley, after professor William G. Tousey bought land here. An 1895 freeze stalled early growth, and the 1929 crash closed nearly every business in town. Growth came back in the mid 1950s, once State Road 60 tied into Adamo Drive and gave a direct route to Tampa. Today it sits between Brandon to the west, Bloomingdale to the southwest and FishHawk to the south, about 10 miles southwest of Plant City. As an unincorporated census place, county rules apply, so permits, zoning and any rental registration run through Hillsborough County.
Against the Hillsborough County averages, more homes are owner occupied (79% vs 61.5%); less of the housing is in apartment and condo buildings (3.4% vs 23%); household incomes are higher ($104,839 vs $79,540) and housing is older (7.9% built since 2010 vs 18.6%).
Cities with similar prices and rents: Apopka ($394,900, $1,969), Meadow Woods ($401,000, $1,906), Ocoee ($406,400, $1,946).
Growth and housing
